Premature menopause

The menopause is the time of a woman's last menstrual period and normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. However, if this natural transition occurs before the age of 40, it is referred to as a premature menopause. For the women affected, this diagnosis is often a major turning point that triggers many questions, uncertainties and worries. The causes of premature menopause are varied, but in the majority of cases cannot be clearly determined. In some situations, genetic factors, autoimmune diseases or the consequences of medical treatment - such as chemotherapy or surgery on the ovaries - are the cause. Often, however, the exact cause remains unclear. The loss of hormonal function of the ovaries not only means premature cessation of menstruation, but also the end of natural fertility - a fact that is particularly stressful for many young women with an unfulfilled desire to have children.

In addition to the emotional impact, the premature menopause also brings with it health challenges. As oestrogens have a protective effect on the bones, cardiovascular system, skin, mucous membranes and psyche, a premature hormone deficiency can increase the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. In addition, menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disorders, mood swings, vaginal dryness or reduced libido can also occur at a very young age and severely restrict quality of life.

For these reasons, it is particularly important to seek targeted medical care in the event of a premature menopause. In these cases, individually tailored hormone treatment is not only useful for alleviating symptoms, but also as a long-term prevention of secondary health conditions. The aim of the therapy is to mimic the natural hormone status up to the typical menopausal age and thus maintain physical and emotional health.
