Egg freezing is a medical method of preserving fertility that was originally developed to protect women with cancer from the potential loss of their reproductive capacity during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In cases of cancer diagnoses in young women, the focus is often on life-saving therapy, but chemotherapy, radiotherapy and certain surgical procedures can severely impair or even permanently destroy the function of the ovaries. Cryopreservation of egg cells or ovarian tissue has established itself as an important preventative measure in order to give affected patients the opportunity to have children of their own at a later date.
In the short time between diagnosis and cancer treatment, it is possible to retrieve hormonally stimulated egg cells and freeze them at very low temperatures. This process takes around two weeks and can be started immediately after diagnosis, depending on the urgency of the cancer treatment. The frozen eggs can be used for many years/decades without any significant loss of quality. Alternatively, ovarian tissue can also be harvested and preserved, which can be particularly useful for very young patients or when time is of the essence. This technique makes it possible to restore natural hormone production and, if necessary, a spontaneous pregnancy by transplanting the tissue back after successful cancer treatment.
The decision to undergo fertility-preserving treatment must be made under time pressure and is associated with many emotional, medical and ethical questions. Rapid and comprehensive advice is therefore essential. The fertisuisse medical team specializes in such issues and takes into account both the oncological prognosis and the patient's individual circumstances and wishes for the future. Aspects such as prognosis, possible risks and costs of cryopreservation are openly addressed by us.
The freezing of eggs (medical freezing) gives cancer patients of childbearing age hope for a later life with children and supports personal planning for the future, even in the midst of a serious medical crisis.
