Osteoporosis - when bones lose stability

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease of the skeletal system in which bone density decreases and bones lose stability. As a result, the risk of bone fractures increases, particularly in the hip, spine and wrist. Although osteoporosis can affect both men and women, women are affected much more frequently, especially after the menopause.

Bone is a living tissue that is constantly remodeling itself throughout life. Bone resorption and bone formation are normally in a balanced equilibrium. However, with increasing age, hormonal changes and certain risk factors, this balance can be disturbed. The result is a gradual decrease in bone substance that often goes unnoticed - until the first bone fracture occurs. In women, the hormone oestrogen in particular plays a central role in bone metabolism. During the fertile years, it protects the bones from excessive breakdown. After the menopause, oestrogen levels drop significantly, which can lead to an accelerated loss of bone mass. This significantly increases the risk of osteoporosis. Women with a premature menopause are particularly affected, either naturally or as a result of medical interventions such as surgery or chemotherapy. In these cases, the protective hormone levels are already lacking at a young age, which can significantly accelerate bone loss.

In addition to the hormonal situation, there are other risk factors that can contribute to the development of osteoporosis: These include a family history, a low body mass index (underweight), lack of exercise, a low-calcium diet, excessive alcohol or nicotine consumption and certain medications (such as cortisone). Chronic digestive or hormonal disorders can also have a negative impact on bone metabolism.

Early diagnosis is crucial in order to recognize and treat osteoporosis in good time. In many cases, the disease is asymptomatic for a long time - until a bone fracture occurs. We can assess the individual risk with a bone density measurement (DXA measurement). If indicated, we carry out a targeted assessment in close cooperation with specialists in bone diseases and advise you comprehensively on possible measures.

Our aim is to slow down further bone loss, stabilize bone density or - if possible - improve it. In addition to drug therapies, we also recommend looking at your personal lifestyle. A balanced diet with sufficient calcium and vitamin D, regular physical activity (especially strength and balance training), avoiding falls and consciously dealing with risk factors are important components of a holistic therapeutic approach.
