Social freezing: preserving eggs

Social freezing - the freezing of unfertilized eggs - gives women more freedom in family planning. Using an ultra-fast freezing method (vitrification method), egg cells, sperm cells and embryos can be frozen gently and without the formation of ice crystals. This very safe method therefore allows eggs to be frozen and then thawed and fertilized at a later date. Freezing has no negative effect on egg quality.

We often carry out social freezing when women have not yet found a suitable life partner or when the living conditions are not yet suitable for starting a family for other reasons (e.g. due to education or other reasons).

Social freezing also gives women security if they are afraid that they will not be able to have children if they wait any longer. This could be the case, for example, due to premature depletion of the egg reserve - or if there is a concern that no more healthy eggs can be produced due to age. With increasing age, not only the number of eggs decreases, but also their quality.

The technique is the same as for medical freezing, the freezing of eggs or sperm cells, which we regularly use for men and women with cancer. In this case, the method is used before chemotherapy or radiation treatment reduces fertility.

The same options are also available for men, although the age-related change in semen quality is only minimal. For this reason, sperm freezing is rarely recommended for men for social reasons.

Social freezing - offers the opportunity to flexibly shape the desire to have children and to postpone starting a family to a later date.

Preserving fertility for the future

Work, leisure and family planning are difficult to combine at certain stages of life. Social freezing helps you to plan your life flexibly despite age-related declining fertility. Eggs from your fertile phase of life can be stored for a desired pregnancy in later stages of your life. The frozen eggs can be thawed again later if required. They are then fertilized with sperm in a test tube. If fertilization is successful, the resulting embryo is implanted in the uterus - with the aim of enabling pregnancy.

Who is egg freezing suitable for?

The aim of social freezing is to extend the biological fertility phase of women. This step makes the most sense at a stage of life in which both the number and quality of eggs are still at a high level. Hormone analyses - in particular anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) - and an ultrasound examination of the ovaries can be used to assess individual fertility. These medical findings provide an important basis for deciding for or against cryopreservation of egg cells.

Can male sperm also be frozen?

Men also have the option of having sperm or testicular tissue cryopreserved. This frozen material can be used at a later date as part of assisted reproductive treatment. This method is particularly useful before fertility-reducing measures, e.g. before cancer treatment - but also before vasectomies. At the Fertility Center, we will be happy to provide you with comprehensive advice on the available options and the associated chances of success.

Can I take medication during the stimulation phase?

Taking medication can lead to undesirable interactions. It is therefore very important to coordinate the intake of any necessary medication with our team during hormone stimulation.

Can I work full-time during social freezing?

Yes, the entire social freezing treatment can be integrated into your daily work routine. You will receive a schedule from us so that any appointments can be planned well in advance.

Can I do sport during the stimulation phase?

Light sporting activities are permitted. However, jerky movements such as kick-back games, martial arts and athletics should be avoided. Also refrain from mud-catching, bungee jumping and hobby horsing!
