Endometriosis - an often underestimated disease

Endometriosis is a chronic disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity. This so-called dispersed mucous membrane can occur in various parts of the body - often in the pelvic area, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines or peritoneum. Although it is a benign disease, the recurring inflammatory reactions can cause a variety of symptoms and significantly impair quality of life. The symptoms of endometriosis vary greatly and range from completely symptom-free to severe, cycle-dependent pain. The symptoms typically occur during menstruation and can manifest as lower abdominal pain, back pain, pain during sexual intercourse or during bowel movements. In some cases, the disease goes unnoticed for a long time as the symptoms are often unspecific or misinterpreted as normal menstrual cramps. This long period of uncertainty is stressful for many sufferers and often leads to a long period of suffering before a diagnosis is finally made.

Endometriosis can be a possible cause of an unfulfilled desire to have children, even if it does not necessarily lead to infertility. The exact impact on fertility depends, among other things, on where the foci are located and how severe the disease is.

There are basically two approaches available for the treatment of endometriosis: hormonal therapy and surgical removal of the affected tissue. Which treatment is suitable depends on various factors, such as the age of the patient, the severity of the symptoms, the desire for pregnancy and the previous course of the disease. Particular caution is required with surgical procedures, especially for women who wish to have children. Repeated operations on the ovaries can permanently impair their function and, in the worst case, lead to a premature menopause. It is therefore important to weigh up operations carefully and carry them out as gently as possible. In many cases, hormonal therapy can help to positively influence the course of the disease. The aim is to suppress the activity of the endometriosis lesions and slow down the progression of the disease.
